ஆசிய அபிவிருத்தி வங்கியில் இயக்குநராகப் பணியாற்றியவரும் , எழுத்தாளரும், மொழிபெயர்ப்பாளருமான திரு. கே.எஸ்.சுப்பிரமணியன் அவர்கள் மறைந்த செய்தியினை எழுத்தாளர் லதா ராமகிருஷ்ணன் அவர்கள் தனது முகநூற் பக்கத்தில் பகிர்ந்திருந்தார். என்னை அதிர்ச்சியடைய வைத்த செய்தி. கலாநிதி கே.எஸ். சுப்பிரமணியன் அவர்களுடன் எனக்கு அண்மையில்தான் அவர் அனுப்பிய மின்னஞ்சல்கள் மூலம் தொடர்பேற்பட்டது.
'கொரோனாக் கால ஊரடங்குச் சட்ட அனுபவங்களை மையமாக வைத்து எழுதப்பட்ட தமிழ்க்கவிதைகளை ஆங்கிலத்துக்கு மொழிபயர்த்தவர் திரு. கே.எஸ்.எஸ் அவர்கள். அதுவொரு தொகுப்பாக 'Lockdown Lyrics' என்னும் பெயரில் நூலாகவும் வெளியாகியுள்ளது. என் கவிதையொன்றும் , ' கொரோனா சூழ் இரவொன்றில் நகர்வலம்!' , அத்தொகுப்பில் இடம் பெற வேண்டுமென்று தொகுப்பாளர்கள் விரும்பினார்கள்.
எனது கவிதை: 'கொரோனா சூழ் இரவொன்றில் நகர்வலம்!' என்னும் கவிதை சிறிது நீண்டது. அதனைச் சிறிது சுருக்கி , ஆங்கிலத்திற்கு மொழிபெயர்த்து Lockdown Lyrics என்னும் தொகுப்பு நூலில் வெளியிட்டுள்ளார். கவிதையினைச் சிறிது சுருக்கி வெளியிடுவதற்காக , வெளியிடுவதற்கு முன்னர் எனக்குக் கடிதம் எழுதி என் அனுமதியைக் கோரினார். பின்னர் நூல் வெளியானதும் அதனை அறிவிப்பதற்காக மின்னஞ்சலொன்றினை அனுப்பினார். அதில் தமிழக முகவரியினையும் கேட்டிருந்தார். தமிழகத்தில் வசிக்கும் என் பால்ய காலத்து நண்பரும் எழுத்தாளருமான ஶ்ரீராம் விக்னேஸ் (ஆர்.விக்கினேஸ்வரன்) அவர்களின் முகவரியையும் கொடுத்து விட்டேன். அதன்படியே நண்பர் நூலை என் சார்பில் பெற்றுக்கொண்டார்.
இங்கு அவரின் புகைப்படத்தையும், என் கவிதையின் நீளத்தை மொழிபெயர்ப்பில் சிறிது குறைப்பதற்காக அனுமதி கேட்டு எழுதிய கடிதத்தையும் அவர் நினைவாகப் பகிர்ந்துகொள்கின்றேன்.
அதிக அளவில் அவர் இனி மொழிபெயர்ப்புப் பணியில் ஈடுபடுவாரென்று எண்ணியிருந்தேன். விரைவில் இவ்விதம் போய்விடுவாரென்று நினைத்திருக்கவேயில்லை. அவரது மறைவு சடுதியானது. நண்பர்கள் யாருமே எதிர்பார்த்திராததொன்று. அவரது மறைவால் துயரில் ஆழ்ந்திருக்கும் குடும்பத்தவர், உறவினர்கள் மற்றும் நண்பர்கள் அனைவருக்கும் ஆழ்ந்த இரங்கலைத் தெரிவித்துக்கொள்கின்றேன்.

Dr.K.S.Subramanian (1937) belongs to the Thirunelveli District of Tamil Nadu and presently lives in Chennai. He has Masters Degrees in Physics and History(University of Madras); Masters Degree in Business Management (Ateneo de Manila University in the Philippines) and a Doctorate in Public Administration(University of the Philippines)
He served the Government of India (IRAS) from 1960 to 1975 and the Asian Development Bank from 1975 to 1998, retiring as a Director.
Since his return to India in 1998, he has been involved in literary and social pursuits. He has translated about 40 Tamil literary works into English. The translations cover novels, novellas, collections of short stories, anthologies of poetry (including Sangam Poems). He has also written in Tamil a large number of collected essays covering literary and socio-economic themes as also biographical and autobiographical works. He has translated more than 40% of Subramania Bharathi’s poetic corpus as a part of the Sahitya Akademi publication of the entire works of Bharathi in English translation. His translations have been published by Sahitya Akademi, Macmillan, Katha, East-West Books, Westland, New Horizon, Tamil University, International Institute of Tamil Studies, Central Institute of Indian Languages, Kavitha Publication, Kanaiyazhi Publication and others.
He has presented a sizeable number of Papers in Tamil and in English in different fora. These include Papers on eminent creative writers of Tamil such as Subramania Bharathi, Na.Pichamurthy, Laa.Sa.Ramamirtham, Thi. Janakiraman, Ka.Naa.Subra manyam, Jayakanthan, Asokamithran, Venkat Saminathan, Sirpi Balasubramaniam, Erode Thamizhanban and others. The Papers also encompass literature – society interface and development – humanism challenges.
He was the compiling editor of Jayakanthan Reader, one of the pioneering efforts in this genre in Tamil. He has collated and brought out seminal articles of the Father of India’s Green Revolution, C.Subramaniam (a Bharat Ratna Honouree), published by Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan.
Ten volumes of his Tamil articles and Papers have been published, covering literary, social and developmental themes.
He has received a few awards in the field of literary translation, e.g. Outstanding Translator Award by the Government of Tamil Nadu, Kalaignar – ‘Bapasi’ Award (Booksellers and Publishers Association of South India), Nalli – ‘Thisai Ettum’ Translation Award etc. He has functioned as a member of the Jury for Sahitya Akademi awards for Tamil and Translation.
He is a Trustee of National Agro Foundation involved in comprehensive rural development, and also a Trustee of MOZHI Trust, a resource centre of Tamil language and culture. He has instituted a few literary awards. He is a former member of the Tamil Advisory Board of Sahitya Akademi.
