About
Stree Gaanam
Women have been making music
since time immemorial, on par with men. However, when it comes to acknowledging
their works or their contributions to the cause of music, they share only
a small space. It is intriguing to note that most of the composers dealt
with, heard, are men. Which makes us believe that women hardly made their
presence felt in this domain; however they have very much been part of
the music-making tradition.
Stree Gaanam is an
attempt to present the works of such women composers spanning several centuries.
These women hail from Andhra, Karnataka, Kerala, Tamil Nadu and their polyglot
compositions are an interesting revelation of the poetry of their times,
an insight into the feminine mind. Stree Gaanam will feature some
of their compositions in a multi-media format with an all women accompanying
artists in Carnatic Music style. Stree Gaanam is an effort to revive,
salvage, preserve and present this work which if not, will go completely
unrecognized and lost to the music world. This is one-of-its-kind attempt
by a Carnatic musician to bring forth the contribution of Women composers
in Carnatic Music. Stree Gaanam will be premiered by Vasumathi
Badrinathan on the eve of International Women's Day on 7th March
2005 in Mumbai.
Stree Gaanam is supported
by the Deportment of Culture, Government of India & co-sponsored by
The Mysore Association, Bombay. Sincere thanks to Sangita Kala Acharya
Sri. T. S. Parthasorathy for all his guidance.
International
Womens Day
Around the world, International
Women's Day (IWD) marks a celebration of the economic, social, cultural
and political achievements for women. The first IWD was held on 19 March
1911 in Germany, Austria, Denmark and further European countries. German
women selected this date because in 1848 the Prussian king had promised
the vote for women. Subsequently over one million leaflets calling for
action on the right to vote were distributed throughout Germany before
IWD in 1911. Now IWD is always celebrated on 8 March and is an occasion
marked by women's groups around the world. This date is also commemorated
at the United Nations and is designated in many countries as a national
holiday. Women in every country, often divided by ethnic, linguistic,
cultural, economic and political differences, come together to celebrate
this important date that represents equality, justice, peace and development.
International Women's Day
is the story of ordinary women as makers of history; it is rooted in the
centuries-old struggle of women seeking to participate equally in society
on an equal footing with men. Until women are fully represented at senior
leadership levels of public, professional and economic life, women do not
have equal rights nor an equal voice. Increasingly, International Women's
Day is a time to reflect on the progress made, to call for change and to
celebrate acts of courage and determination by ordinary women who have
played an extraordinary role in the history of women's rights.
