ARMED CONFLICT!

Sri
Lanka’s twenty-one year civil war has taken a heavy toll on children, particularly
in the north and east of the country. Many children have witnessed extreme
violence during a war that has cost 60,000 lives. Many have lost their
parents or other family members. Others have been displaced from their
homes. Schools have been destroyed. Many youth have few job prospects.
Many children participated directly in the war.
Although the 2002 ceasefire
has brought an end to active hostilities, it has not ended the recruitment
of children for use as fighters. In August 2004, Human Rights Watch conducted
an investigation in the eastern districts of Sri Lanka to document the
on-going recruitment and use of children as soldiers.
Please join Human Rights
Watch for a special event to discuss its investigation and the impact of
Sri Lanka’s war on children.
Speakers include:
THE HONORABLE BOB RAE,
Former Ontario Premier
JO BECKER, Human Rights
Watch
Chair: NOAH NOVOGRODSKY,
