TNA becomes third largest
party in
Sri Lanka’s 13th parliament!

The United Peoples Freedom
Alliance (UPFA) Sunday evening emerged as the single largest party in the
Sri Lanka’s thirteenth 225-member parliament with 105 seats and United
National Party (UNP) with 82 seats. The Tamil National Alliance (TNA) which
won four electoral districts, Jaffna, Vanni, Trincomalee and Batticaloa
in the northeast province except Amparai became the third largest party
in the new parliament with twenty two seats.
According to the results
of the all the twenty two electoral districts declared Sunday evening,
the UPFA has won 92 seats, UNP 71, Tamil National Alliance (TNA) 20, Jathika
Hela Urumaya (JHU) 7, Sri Lanka Muslim Congress (SLMC) 04, Upcountry Peoples
Front (UPF) 01, Eelam Peoples Democratic Party (EPDP) 01-bringing the total
number of 196 elected parliamentarians under the proportional system in
the 225 member-parliament.
The UPFA got 13 national
list seats, UNP 11, TNA 2, JHU 2, SLMC 1, election department sources said.
With addition of twenty-nine
national list parliamentarians the final party strength in the new parliament
is:

"We have been closely
watching the current political situation," Tamil National Alliance leader
and the re-elected Trincomalee district parliamentarian Mr.R.Sampanthan
told Mr.Bradman Weerakoon, Special Advisor to the Prime Minister Mr.Ranil
Wickremasinghe in a telephonic conversation initiated by the latter Sunday
morning, political sources said.

Sivankoviladi Tamil youths Saturday evening soon they were re-elected
"We solidly stand behind
the Interim Self Governing Authority (ISGA) proposal submitted by the Liberation
Tigers of Tamil Eelam. Tamils also have expressed their firm stand that
they are fully backing the ISGA proposal through their verdict in the Friday
poll. The trials and tribulations of the hundreds of thousands of displaced
Tamil people now languishing in refugee camps should be brought to an end
very soon with the formation of the ISGA where the Tamils should be allowed
to reconstruct and rehabilitate their war devastated province", said Mr.Sampanthan
during his discussion with Mr.Bradman Weerakone, sources said
The Prime Minister Mr.Ranil
Wickremasinghe is reported to be in constant touch with Mr.Sampanthan since
Friday, Colombo
political sources said.
The re-elected parliaments
from the Trincomalee district Mr.Sampanthan and Mr.K.Thurairatnasingham
first paid a visit to the political office of the LTTE in Trincomalee town
where they were welcomed by the LTTE district political head Mr.Thilak
and other local activists. Thereafter they paid their homage to the statue
of Ilankai Tamil Arasu Katchchi founder leader Mr.S.J.V.Chelvanayakam,
which is located at Sivankoviladi in Trincomalee, sources said.
