Desi Life: Magazine bows with desi flavour!

premier lifestyle magazine aimed at South Asians across the GTA and those
interested in South Asian culture will be launched next week by the Star Media
Group. On April 19, Desi Life, a bimonthly magazine, will arrive at the doors of
55,000 select households across the Greater Toronto Area, independent of
deliveries of the Toronto Star.
The Desi Life launch comes at a time when the GTA has become home to more than a
half-million people with South Asian roots. Statistics Canada estimates their
numbers will double in the next 10 years. "They (South Asians) are well
educated, sophisticated and are a growing influence in Canadian public life,"
said Bageshree (Shree) Paradkar, the magazine's editor. "This magazine is a
recognition of their growing influence."
As to who constitutes the South Asian community, she said, "There is no one
South Asian community. It is a group of very diverse communities. "Toronto has a
wide variety of people of South Asian origin who come not only from the Indian
subcontinent but also from the Caribbean, Middle East and Africa."
Desi Life will cover the "three C's" – curry, cricket and cinema – but also
feature stories about music, South Asian celebrities coming to town and local
achievers across the GTA.
Social issues that are often talked about within these communities, but rarely
find their way into the mainstream media, will be discussed in the magazine.
Along with Bollywood stories, fashion, recipes, and World Cup coverage, the
premiere issue has an exclusive interview with Pakistani cricketing legend Wasim
Akram.
The cover story features Brampton-Springdale MP Ruby Dhalla, who talks about her
life and growing up in Winnipeg.
"We know they love the Star and we have to give them more choices," J. Fred
Kuntz, editor-in-chief of the Toronto Star and Desi Life, said of the magazine's
target audience.
"Their sheer size has to be respected," he said.
"The time has come ... this is a very media savvy, highly literate and educated
audience that demands media voices."
An additional 10,000 copies of the inaugural issue will be available at
libraries, Pizza Pizza outlets and consulates.
